Director--Jay Livernois

Jay Livernois is one of the founders of the Abraxas Voice Institute. From 2005 to 2011, he was the Director of the Roy Hart International Arts Centre (the CAIRH, famous to this day for its beautiful location and its Roy Hart Theatre voice work) at the Château de Malérargues, France.

He first became interested in voice work in 1983 while a Ph.D. student in languages and psychology at the University of Connecticut. In 1984, along with the psychologist James Hillman and the poet-mythologist Charles Boer, he visited and participated in his first workshop with the Roy Hart Theatre. Over subsequent years, he participated in numerous workshops and lectured on a range of subjects at events sponsored by Enrique Pardo's Pantheatre, Roy Hart Theatre, and the French government (1993-2008). In July 2012, he presented his lecture, A Feast for the Ears Means Food for Soul: Orpheus and Psychoanalysis in Brazil.

Before working as the Director of the CAIRH, Jay was a longtime editor with Spring Publications (1989-2000) and the Director of the famous Eranos Foundation in Ascona, Switzerland (2000-2002) and the publisher of its yearbook (1991-2001).

As a Spring Publications editor, Jay first published writings of Alfred Wolfsohn (Spring 1990), Pantheatre’s Enrique Pardo, Noah Pikes’ Dark Voices (1999the definitive history of Roy Hart Theatre), and is now the executive editor of Abraxas Publishing. He is the publisher and general editor of Alfred Wolfsohn’s seminal text on voice, Orpheus or the Way to a Mask.

He also is a longtime public member of the American Board of Accreditation in Psychoanalysis (the talking cure; 1997-present), a member of the National Association for the Advancement of Psychoanalysis (NAAP), a member of the Voice and Speech Trainers Association (VASTA), and has been involved in public education through boards and committees since 1993. In this role Jay is presently the President of the Woodstock Academy Alumni Association and a member on the Woodstock Academy Board of Trustees in Woodstock, Connecticut.
